Upcoming Alien Film Receives Intriguing Tease from Romulus Producer as Early Development Begins
Alien: Romulus producer Michael Pruss has hinted that the next Alien film may not be a direct sequel. Directed by Fede Álvarez, the latest entry in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror franchise follows Cailee Spaeny’s Rain and David Jonsson’s Andy, two young crew members who face a Xenomorph aboard an abandoned space station. *Alien: Romulus* was both a critical success and a box office hit, and soon after its release, news broke that Álvarez was developing a follow-up.
In a recent interview with *ScreenRant* at the Saturn Awards, Pruss provided an update on the sequel, confirming that it remains in the early stages of development. He revealed that all possibilities are being considered for the story, including ideas that aren’t direct continuations of *Romulus*. However, whether they ultimately take that approach is still undecided.
Following the mixed reception of *Alien: Covenant* (2017), Fede Álvarez’s *Alien: Romulus* takes the franchise in a fresh direction, introducing a new cast and premise. The film concludes with Rain and Andy as the sole survivors, setting off on a journey to Yvaga III. Previous reports have suggested that the next installment will bring back both characters, and Álvarez himself recently hinted at what’s ahead in an interview with *Empire*:
"I think it’ll be incredibly exciting to follow these characters from this film into an unexplored part of the *Alien* universe and uncover things audiences have never seen before."
Pruss' comment, however, seemingly confirms that Alvarez and Scott aren't married to the idea of continuing Rain and Andy's story. With it still being so early in the development process, it's clear that the next movie is very much in the brainstorming phase, with Alvarez and Scott exploring all potential options when it comes to story. That being said, with both Alvarez and 20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell having expressed interest in seeing Rain and Andy return, it's still entirely possible that audiences will be seeing these Alien: Romulus characters again.
