HBO Reveals Expected Number of Seasons for The Last of Us

Season 2 of The Last of Us is set to premiere in April 2025. As anticipation builds, an HBO executive has shed light on how many seasons the series is expected to last. The upcoming season will adapt only part of The Last of Us Part II, with showrunner Craig Mazin previously suggesting that the story may require multiple seasons to fully explore. Speaking to Deadline, HBO executive Francesca Orsi provided an update on the series' overall plan. “We don’t have a complete or final roadmap, but right now, it looks like four seasons,” Orsi shared. “I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it seems like we’ll have this season and then two more after that before wrapping up.”
This aligns with Mazin’s recent comments: “I think it’s pretty likely that our story will extend past a Season 3. How far past? I can’t say.” As for what to expect in Season 2, Orsi teased, “There are various factions competing for survival that emerge as intriguing groups, each with a distinct identity and presence.” Set 20 years after the fall of modern civilization, HBO’s The Last of Us follows Joel, a hardened survivor, as he is tasked with smuggling 14-year-old Ellie out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What begins as a simple job quickly turns into a brutal, emotional journey across the United States, where the two must rely on each other to survive.
